A local Spanish man spoke today of his deep admiration for the way Juan José Cobo (Geox-TMC) climbed the Angliru on Sunday afternoon and saw no reason to raise at least one piliferous eyebrow with the way in which his fellow countryman destroyed the rest of the field.
The local Spaniard interviewed was one of several thousand who had lined the route, many donning “hilarious” costumes and drinking to excess.
When questioned on the what he thought of Cobo, Manuel Bolsas de Sangras said that it was good to see a Spaniard doing what Spaniards do best, although Señor Bolsas de Sangras would not be drawn further to defining exactly what this was.
This reporter explained to the local Spanish man, and several others who had gathered around, that Cobo’s time for ascent of the Angliru would be difficult to achieve on a Ducati motorcycle. Sñr Bolsas de Sangras replied:
“This is because is Italian motorcycle. And those other hombres behind Cobo? They simply do not try. They do not try in the way a Spaniard tries.”
Manuel Bolsas de Sangras could not, once again, be prompted to elaborate further as to what he meant by this. Onlookers agreed.
