Never one to sit on the sidelines, Alberto Contador announced today that he will be starring on a special episode of NBC’s Celebrity Fear Factor in 2012. The extreme game show features contestants vying for cash and prizes by performing dangerous stunts, exposing themselves to poisonous and/or slimy insects and reptiles, and ingesting disgusting substances.
According to Fear Factor producer, Robert Raynard, “Contador demonstrated his resilience in 2008 when he went from lying on the beach one week to entering and leading the Giro d’Italia a week later, a race which he eventually won. If he can do that, I’m sure he won’t have any problem chugging down the pitchers of donkey urine and semen that comprise our ‘go-to’ stunt.” Even though the donkey fluid episode was recently pulled by NBC censors before its airing, Raynard feels Alberto has the star power to get it back on the air. “Anyone who will eat a ‘Special Spanish Steak’ on a rest day during the Tour de France doesn’t have to demonstrate his bravery to me in any other way.”
Fear Factor first considered bringing in Jan Ullrich, as Raynard observed “That guy will eat anything, but Alberto is a much more relevant performer, and will have global appeal.” Regarding appeals, at the time of this report, there are no plans to add an appeals process to the Fear Factor series.
NBC is also in negotiations with Garmin Barracuda boss Jonathan Vaughters to host an American adaptation of the Japanese game show, ロスト·イン·トランスレーション, (Lost in Translation). This show pits international contestants who have a marginal grasp of the
English language against one another as they try to perform tasks explained to them over a radio by Vaughters. In the pilot episode, a Norwegian contestant fails to follow directions and is sent home. Winners advance to a lightning round, hosted by Garmin Barracuda cyclist Dave Zabriskie, where they are subjected to strange smells and must identify them.
